Learning is scary.
A question I recently overheard from a worker to their leader: “How much do you want to know?”
What a powerful question for an organization to ponder – have you ever really thought about it?
The raw, real, and sometimes ugly truth often scares leaders up through an organization – it challenges their assumptions and beliefs about the organization.
The discovery of these scary truths can create fear, they can create disruption, they can generate poor reactions from above, and they can create a need for action in an already busy work world. Often, it’s easier to leave these hard truths in the shadows rather than to learn of their existence.
Organizations must not only create environments in which employees have the ability to be honest, but they must also create environments in which it is safe for leaders to hear.
So, “how much do you want to know?”
